Designing a Book That Reflects Its Author

One of the more rewarding projects I have worked on was the design and page layout of a book by Sara Doljak, a wonderful Slovene lawyer with multiplasklerosis, published by Družina in življenje.

The challenge extended beyond arranging text on a page. The typographic system, layout, and overall visual language needed to reflect both the author’s voice and the nature of the content while remaining approachable to its intended readership.

The cover was developed as an extension of the book’s interior rather than as a separate graphic object. A soft-touch hardbound finish was paired with a gloss treatment on the title, creating a subtle tactile contrast that becomes apparent when the book is held and handled.

Every design decision—from typography and hierarchy to materials and production—was made with the reading experience in mind.

It was a pleasure collaborating on a publication that carried such a personal and meaningful story, and I am grateful for the trust placed in the design process.
