In collaboration with Project Emaus, I had the opportunity to lead a workshop on the fundamentals of design for catechists and educators.
The goal was not to teach software or professional graphic design, but to help participants communicate more clearly through the materials they create for teaching, events, and parish life.
The workshop explored several foundational topics:
- Typography and font selection
- Differences between serif and sans-serif typefaces
- Font weights and hierarchy
- Readability and legibility
- Basic page layout principles
- The role of negative space
- Colour, contrast, and visual emphasis
Rather than focusing on visual trends, the presentation emphasised how design choices influence understanding. Small decisions regarding type, spacing, hierarchy, and colour can significantly affect whether information is easy to read, navigate, and remember.
Projects like this remind me that design is fundamentally about communication. Good design is not decoration; it is the thoughtful organisation of information in a way that helps people engage with content more effectively.
